'Eastern' Caspian Gull

Larus cachinnans

Above: Adult (Essex, 16 January 2010)

This looks like a dark-eyed, pale plumaged Yellow-legged Gull. But despite the limited penetration of the grey tongue into the black upperside of P10 in the right wing (see last picture, above), the other primaries showed limited black with grey tongues invading P9 to P6. The pattern of the underside of P10 in the bird's right wing is also closer to Caspian, showing an extensive amount of white in the inner web.

So maybe this is a Caspian Gull, rather than a Yellow-legged. See also this putative Caspian Gull for comparison.
