Caspian Gull

Larus cachinnans

Above: Adult (Essex, 29 January 2011)

This adult displayed a classic 'ponticus' wing pattern in flight - with lots of white in the primary tips and long penetrating grey tongues - but it is disconcertingly pale-eyed and deep-billed to western eyes. However, it's certainly a good Caspian and a reminder that a significant proportion of the Caspian Gull population have pale eyes.
