Herring Gull

Larus argentatus

Above: First winter/First calendar year (Essex, 27 Novermber 2010)

A rather deep and blunt bill give a rather michie look to this individual. But the short profile (short back end and wings), short thick legs and heavily notched greater coverts - combined with dark gingery colours - are more indicative of a northern Herring Gull (possibly L. a. argentatus).
