Yellow-legged Gull

Larus michahellis

Above: 1st winter/1st calendar year (Essex, 31 December 2011)

Compare the moult, first generation tertials (except the visible greyish second generation tertial on the right side) and narrow shape of the primaries in this first winter Yellow-legged (main bird, just right of centre) with the second winter Herring (far left). Note to the 'tall' body structure and strong bill proportions.
