Great Cormorant
Phalacrocorax carbo

(Above) Umm Bab, Qatar, 19 February 2013 (EOS 7D, 300mm f2.8 + 2x Extender)

OK, so Great Cormorants are pretty dull on first sight. Especially the young birds. But the more you look, the more you see. They are not everyone's best friend (least of all the fishermen's friend), and they are somewhat prehistorically reptilian. But it's difficult to ignore that compelling emerald eye.
