Socotra Cormorant
Phalacrocorax nigrogularis

(Above) Umm Bab, Qatar, 14 November 2012 (EOS 7D, 300mm f2.8 + 2x Extender)

An evocative and tantalizing species. Though often seen in flocks of thousands, they remain timid and difficult to photograph (at least without a boat or at their breeding colonies). I got this 'sea-level' record shot by wading out in chest-high waters towards the exposed reef. Even so, they flew off before I got anywhere near them.
