Socotra Cormorant
Phalacrocorax nigrogularis

(Above) Al Ruwais, Qatar, 04 February 2013 (Digibinned: Swarovski 8x32 EL + Sony DSC-W610)

Horribly tangled up in nylon fishing line that was caught on the rocks, and with barbed hooks through its leg and foot, this young bird was unable to leave the rocks it was standing on. After a few beakfuls of my arm and hand, I managed to remove all the line and hooks. With such a long neck, it was impossible to hold this bird in such a way that it couldn't clamp its sharp mandibles on my arms and legs. It was successfuly released back into the harbour and flew away strongly - without even a backwards glance in lieu of a thank you!
