Greater Flamingo
Phoenicopterus roseus

(Above) Al Khor, Qatar, 20 February 2013 (EOS 7D, 300mm f2.8 + 2x Extender)

A small area of freshwater overflow from the nearby building works of the city is enough to attract a wary Flamingo. Out in the open like this, it is vulnerable to the unwanted attentions of hunters and falconers. Although it is against the law to hunt with guns, it goes on everywhere, as we have witnessed firsthand. The carnage is absurd; birds shot and simply left to die on the ground.
