Daurian Shrike
Lanius isabellinus

(Above) Pools North of Salwa Rd Exit 24, Doha, Qatar, 30 October 2012 (EOS 7D, 300mm f2.8 + 2x Extender)

This looks to be a first winter Daurian Shrike (L. isabellinus), rather than Turkestan Shrike (L. phoenicuroides) due to:

  • Overall warm, sandy buff colouration
  • Weak, patterned supercilium (including lack of supercilium infront of the eye)
  • Subtle buff wash to front and sides of throat
  • More obvious buffy colouration along sides of lower breast and flanks
  • Even, warm and bright orangey-rufous colouration along whole length of tail
