Daurian Shrike
Lanius isabellinus

(Above) Al Karaana Sewage Ponds, Qatar, 04 January 2013 (EOS 7D, 300mm f2.8 + 2x Extender)

Distant crops of this over-wintering adult male. Despite the arrestingly broad white supercilium behind the eye, identificationof this adult male as L. isabellinus rather than L. phoenicuroides is supported by:

  • Pale sandy-brown upperparts
  • Warmer toned forehead and upper border to ear coverts contrasting with pale sandy brown crown and nape
  • Pale based bill
  • Black mask rather narrow, not completely surrounding the eye (though it does extend thinly over the base of the bill )
  • Extensively coloured (rich apricot) underparts
  • Weak supercilium in front of the eye
  • Lack of a contrastingly rufous crown
  • Obviously buff (not whitish) edges to tertials
