Steppe Grey Shrike?
Lanius (meridionalis) pallidirostris?

(Above) Traina Garden Village Road, Qatar, 08 November 2012 (EOS 7D, 300mm f2.8 + 2x Extender)

I'm not at all convinced that this is a Southern Grey Shrike of the local form L. m. aucheri. Note:

  • Weak loral area, with the greyish black of the lores not extending up over the top of the bill
  • Very large white base to the primaries
  • Exceptionally long primary projection beyond the tertials, reminiscent of Lesser Grey Shrike
  • Clear white, continuous though narrow, white supercilium bordering the black mask above and behind the eye
  • Impression of a proportionately short tail

Although the pallor of the upperparts is not striking, the structure and visible plumage of this bird fits Steppe Grey Shrike (L. (m.) pallidirostris) much more closely.

Compare the primary projection, supercilium, extent of dark lores and primary patch of the individual above with this one and this one too - both of which show the short primary projection, lack of an obvious supercilium and discrete small primary patch typical of aucheri.
