Turkestan Shrike
Lanius phoenicuroides

(Above) Irkayya Farm, Qatar, 10 October 2012 (EOS 7D, 300mm f2.8 + 2x Extender)

I suspect this is likely to be a first winter Turkestan Shrike (L. phoenicuroides), rather than Daurian Shrike (L. isabellinus) due to:

  • Strongly barred crown
  • Striking white supercilium (and forehead)
  • Cold grey tone of brown upperparts, with only the rump and uppertail noticeably warmer rufous
  • Cold white underparts lacking any significant warmer buff-coloured areas
  • Prominent white sub-terminal 'spades' on greater and, particularly, median coverts
