Above: Balvicar, Argyle (November 2001)

After a two-week stay, I finally got myself on a plane, hired a car ... and then sat all day waiting. As the day ended, the sun began to sink and my hopes with it. Then came Bill Jackson to the rescue, taking those of us that were left to its favoured roosting tree and various feeding pools.

Alas, no joy. It was almost dark and we had now fully given up hope. But then Frank Hamilton cried "What's this?", as a ghostly white shape flew in towards us. Down it came, spending twenty minutes lit by our car headlights feeding in front of us. Tick!! Thanks for your indefatigible optimism, Bill. And thanks Frank!
