(Thick-billed) Nutcracker

Above: Westleton, Suffolk (November 1985). Scanned from print.

Long before that Dutch bird learned to take nuts from birders' hats, this individual was delighting the crowds in Suffolk. But a frenzied diet of apple pips was its undoing. After a few days, it most likely succumbed to a combination of starvation and poisoning. (Apple pips have a significant concentration of cyanide!)
